Music theory gives us an overview of how written music works. It can help us to discover more about the music we play and give us insight into how composers write music.

Grade 5 theory is needed in order to move on to grade 6 and above in the ABRSM exam system but there are exam bodies that do not require this additional qualification. 

​

If started early, theory can be an exciting journey of musical discovery and will help with the practical side of playing every step of the way. I would advise this as jumping in at grade 5 can often be a shock to the system with a lot of new areas to learn about. 

​

Whether starting from the early stages or jumping in at the deep end, music theory will need to be a separate part of your music learning.
